While Communitas is a space for ministry that is shared across denominations without dividing over secondary doctrinal issues it is important to stress that we think that there are primary doctrines of orthodoxy which are essential to unity.
Secondary doctrines include such things as the definition and extent of human freedom, the timing of Christ’s return, modes of baptism, form of church government, style of music, etc. Primary doctrines include those things relating to Christ’s nature, what it means to be redeemed and how one is redeemed, etc. While there are many important theological and ethical questions, we hold the following to be a basic (not exhaustive) statement of orthodoxy:
- The scriptures are the final authority for all matters of faith and practice.
- The Trinity as described in the historic creeds of the church
- The Virgin Birth
- The physical incarnation of the Christ, his sinless life, his vicarious atonement, his physical resurrection, his promised return
- Jesus Christ is the only way of justification and salvation
Justification is by faith alone
